2010 Video of 90-year-old Curly Seckler: One of the Pioneers of Bluegrass

Back in 2010, the Bluegrass Hall of Fame used its annual ROMP Festival to honor the "Pioneers of Bluegrass," what the folks there call first generation bluegrass performers.  Those were the elite group of men and women who were around when the music was being shaped and turned into the sound we all love so much today.

This is one of the many videos I shot that year, this one featuring the fabulous Curly Seckler being backed by the Whites who were kind enough to share their time on stage with Curly.

Curly was over 90 years old that night in late June 2010 and had survived open heart surgery earlier in the year (April).  I saw Curly around a lot that weekend and he seemed to be the life of the party everywhere he went.  Curly is now almost 97 years old.

In the thirties, Curly and his two brothers (George and Duard) formed The Trailblazers and had a lot of success throughout the Southeast, so much so, that Charlie Monroe ended up hiring the 19-year-old Curly to be a member of his own band.  Next up for Curly (1949-1962) was a long stint as one of the Foggy Mountain Boys with Flatt and Scruggs before he left to become leader of the Nashville Bluegrass Band.

Curly retired in 1994, but not before working with the likes of Jim & Jesse, Mac Wiseman, the Stanley Brothers, and Doyle Lawson along the way. Topping off what proved to be a magnificent career, Curly Seckler was elected to the Bluegrass Hall of Fame in 2004.

Precious memories...
